The Albanian Alps around Theth and Valbona, the Llogara Pass on the Riviera, the Kelmend valley in the far north and the high tracks toward Ceremi and Doberdol are reached by narrow, winding and often unpaved roads. Where a 4x4 Makes the Difference in Albania

These are the destinations where four-wheel drive turns a stressful drive into an easy one:

• Theth (Albanian Alps) - the final 20 kilometres from the Boge pass into Theth include steep gravel and hairpins. The road has improved but still favours an SUV, especially after rain. Around 3 hours 30 minutes from Tirana.
• Valbona Valley - reached from Shkoder via Koman or overland from Theth. Gravel sections and river fords make a 4x4 the sensible choice for the valley and the trailheads.
• Llogara Pass - a paved but dramatic 1,000-metre climb on the Riviera between Vlore and Saranda. Any car can do it, but an AWD gives confidence on the switchbacks and in fog.
• Kelmend and Cem Valley - remote far-north villages near the Montenegrin border with rough tracks and stunning canyons. A 4x4 is strongly recommended.
• Doberdol and Ceremi - high summer-pasture villages on the Peaks of the Balkans trail, accessed by rough 4WD tracks. Low range helps here.
• Southern beaches - hidden coves near Himara, Gjipe and Porto Palermo are reached down steep unpaved lanes where higher ground clearance pays off.

For Tirana, Durres, Berat, Gjirokaster and the main coast road, you do not strictly need a 4x4 - but many travellers still choose one for the extra clearance on Albania's potholed secondary roads and the comfort of a higher driving position.

Insurance, Off-Road Rules and Documents

Every 4Drive rental includes collision damage waiver (CDW) and third-party liability at no extra cost. On 4x4 vehicles it is important to understand where you are covered. Standard insurance covers you on all public roads, paved and unpaved, including the gravel routes to Theth and Valbona. Genuine off-road driving - river crossings, unmarked tracks and river beds - is not covered by any rental insurance in Albania, the same as everywhere in Europe, so stay on established roads and tracks and you are fully protected. If you plan a route you are unsure about, ask us first and we will tell you honestly whether your booking covers it.

To collect a 4x4 you need a driving licence held for at least one year, your passport, and a debit card or cash. Minimum age is 23 for SUVs and 4x4 vehicles (21 for economy cars). Licences in a non-Latin script need an International Driving Permit alongside them. Cross-border trips into Montenegro, Kosovo, North Macedonia or Greece are allowed - just tell us when booking so we prepare the green card insurance certificate. There is no extra charge for the paperwork, but we need advance notice.
